As global fragility is on the rise, there is a great need for new system of disaster relief which will provide support to front line workers and community organizations. Expanding on the concept of mutual aid, whereby NGOs work together to provide support and assistance to those in need.
The current system of disaster relief is based on the principle of top-down aid, whereby large NGOs provide aid and assistance to those affected by disasters. However, this system is at times inefficient and/or ineffective, as it fails to take into account the specific needs of those on the ground. This can lead to a situation where aid is not properly targeted, or it does not reach those who need it the most at the time they need it most
The objectives of United Refuge are to influence traditional disaster relief by providing support to front line workers and community organizations; and to innovate by introducing new products and services to serve those in need.United Refuge’s approach to disaster relief are:1. Technical, logistical, and administrative support to existing actors2. Identification of funds that will be used to support the work of frontline responders3. Development of products and services targeted at “At-Risk” Communities4. Monitoring and evaluation to help ensure that the system is effective and incorporates feedback and iterates quickly
